Jono Gibbes named new Chiefs head coach for Super Rugby Pacific

New La Rochelle Director of Rugby Jono Gibbes

The Chiefs have today announced Jono Gibbes as the club’s new head coach for 2026, taking over from the departing Clayton McMillan, who is now the head coach at Munster.

Gibbes has served as an assistant at the Chiefs since 2024, and has previously held multiple coaching roles outside of New Zealand.

Gibbes has coached the New Zealand U20’s, Leinster (Forwards coach), Clermont Auvergne (Forwards coach), La Rochelle (Director of Rugby), and Ulster in his coaching career, as well as winning a Bunnings NPC title with Waikato before linking up with the Chiefs.

The 48-year-old former All Black also captained the Maori All Blacks to a historic victory in 2005 against the British and Irish Lions in New Zealand, while also racking up over 130 appearances for Waikato and the Chiefs combined.

Gibbes says that the Chiefs environment has grown over the years, and that he is looking forward to helping this team grow.

“Being part of the organisation for the past two years has given me a real appreciation for what’s been built here and how this team has grown into a consistent, competitive unit,” Gibbes says on a Chiefs statement.

“My job now is to help maintain that consistency and keep pushing to unlock the full potential of this team. We have a strong foundation and a lot of talent, so I’m excited about what we can achieve.”

Departing Chiefs head coach Clayton McMillan is excited about what the future holds for the club, and has high praise for Gibbes.

“Jono brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and a strong connection to the region. The coaching, management and playing group has a lot of continuity and cohesion, which is a strong foundation to build from,” McMillan told the Chiefs.

“I have no doubt this group will lead the Chiefs to great things and continue to excite and inspire our loyal supporters, stakeholders and whanau. Ka whawhai tonu matou – Ake Ake Ake.

Chris Lendrum, who is New Zealand Rugby’s General Manager of Professional Rugby and Performance, explains that the organisation is excited about the opportunity for Gibbes.

“Jono is a highly experienced coach who has a deep knowledge of professional rugby environments and has led major rugby programmes in Ireland, France and New Zealand,” Lendrum said.

“He has a deep connection and understanding of the game in Aotearoa and his record and reputation are compelling.

“We are thrilled he has the opportunity to lead the Club that he gave so much to as a player and continue his significant contribution to our game as the Gallagher Chiefs Head Coach.”

Hopefully the man to take us to the next level - great squad, foundation and culture to work with.

While this appointment is not a surprise, it is good for Chief’s continuity and builds on gains that have been made during the McMillan tenure. I like that it taps into the breadth of Gibbes experience and offers a fresh perspective for consolidation of those gains. Chiefs have been “nearly” for several years and sometimes “tweaks” rather than wholesale change can lead to ultimate success.
