Johan Ackermann has been named the new head coach of the Bulls, returning to the club he started his playing career with.

The former South Africa lock, 55, was part of a three-man shortlist to take over at Loftus Versfeld following Jake White’s departure at the beginning of July.

Ackermann will link up with his new team after the World Rugby U20 Championship, where he is working as an assistant with the Junior Springboks, who face New Zealand in the final on Saturday.

The move will mean Ackermann will coach against his son, Ruan, next season in the United Rugby Championship, who is set to join the Stormers.

“The moment I received the call I got goose bumps – it still feels too good to be true,” Ackermann said. “I’m like a Grade One going to school for the first time. I’m so excited; it’s a privilege and an honour.”

“It’s a great union with wonderful tradition and supporters. Eighty per cent of my friends are Bulls supporters. The Vodacom Bulls have been successful for so many years, and now I have that challenge and must thank the Board for the opportunity. It’s a bit different to my previous roles where I had to help build teams up. The Bulls are already there – now I must make them grow and succeed even more.”

President of the Bulls Willem Strauss said: “He’s the right person at the right time. He’s a Carlton League legend, he played his first Test at Loftus, he played for the Bulls… his blood is blue. This was always meant to be. His management of people and ability to drive culture are renowned.”

CEO Edgar Rathbone added: “Johan Ackermann is not just an outstanding coach; he is a leader who lives and breathes the values of this union. His reputation for forging powerful team cultures, developing players to their full potential, and delivering results at the highest level is well proven.

“The Vodacom Bulls are a club built on legacy and ambition, and with Johan at the helm, we are confident our future will be shaped by excellence, resilience, and unity. This appointment marks an exciting new chapter for Bulls rugby, and we are thrilled to welcome him home.”

So the coach who lost 3 URC finals has been replaced with the coach who lost 3 SuperRugby finals!

Nobody can discount the Job Jake White did. He took the bulls from a quagmire to a Currie Cup win, Super Rugby Unlocked win and 3 URC finals. He built up the team, created a new generation of stars with a number of Springboks promoted from the Bulls Set Up. Jake demanded professionalism and high standards. He rubbed people the wrong way as he always does with his opinions and demands. At least he did it his way but in the end change was probably needed at the Bulls and Ackerman is as good a coach as any to lead that change

Good man manager at least. Tactics will be interesting. I’m sure he’s learned a bit since his Lions days.
