Perpignan

History of USA Perpignan

Perpignan Rugby Club was founded way back in 1902. Back then, the club was known as AS Perpignan. Over the years, the team has been known by many different names. For example, in 1919, they were renamed US Perpignan. The team adopted its current name in 1933.

The Perpignan rugby team was most successful in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. During this time, the team reached the final of the French Championship on six occasions, winning three times (1938, 1944 and 1955). However, the team did not reach another final until 1977 and didn’t win the French Championship again until 2009.

The 2009 title is the club’s only top-tier trophy of the professional era. However, the side did make the final of the European Rugby Champions Cup (then known as the Heineken Cup) in 2003. Sadly though, they were defeated by Stade Toulousain. In more recent years, the Perpignan rugby team has yo-yoed between the Top 14 and the Pro D2

At the close of the 2024-25 season, Perpignan took part in the relegation play-off. They edged past Grenoble 13-11 in order to keep their place in the Top 14 for the 2025-26 season.
