Portugal star Nicolás Martins to exit MHR for Top 14 hopefuls
Portuguese international Nicolás Martins is in advanced talks to join US Colomiers, with an agreement expected to be finalised in the coming weeks. The move is set to go ahead regardless of whether Colomiers secure promotion to the Top 14.
Martins, one of Portugal’s standout performers at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, joined Montpellier ahead of the 2024/25 season but has seen limited game time. Despite making just a single Top 14 appearance, the 26-year-old back row impressed in Montpellier’s European campaign, scoring two tries and posting a 95% tackle success rate.
He also played a key role in helping Portugal secure qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup earlier this year and was shortlisted for the Rugby Europe Championship Player of the Tournament award.
Montpellier, eager to return to Top 14 title contention, have begun reshaping their squad—with Martins among those deemed surplus to requirements. Colomiers had shown interest in the flanker prior to his move to Montpellier and have now renewed their pursuit, with sources close to the negotiations confident the deal will be completed.
Runners-up in the Top 14 back in 2000, Colomiers subsequently entered administration and endured a turbulent period before mounting a comeback in the 2010s. Now firmly established in the Pro D2, the club is once again targeting promotion to the top flight.
Martins would join fellow Portuguese internationals Vincent Pinto and Rodrigo Marta in a squad that also includes high-profile players such as Wallaby No.8 Caleb Timu, former Highlander Jack Whetton, Moana Pasifika wing Anzelo Tuitavuki, and ex-Harlequins fly-half Brett Herron.
Before completing the move, Martins is expected to feature for Portugal in their summer Test against Ireland, scheduled for 12 July.
