History of US Montauban

US Montauban was founded in 1903 and the team claimed their first championship in 1967, after defeating CA Bègles 11-3. To date, this remains the side’s only top flight title.

Between the 1967 triumph and the turn of the millennium, the team remained relatively quiet. However, ever since 2000, they have yo-yoed between divisions.

In 2001, Mountauban defeated Toulon in order to gain promotion from the Pro D2 to the Top 14 (then known as the Top 16). They then managed to stay in the division for a couple of seasons, before suffering relegation in 2003-04.

Thankfully, they were promoted once again at the conclusion of the 2005-06 Pro D2 season. Following this, the Montauban rugby team played solidly during the 2006-07 Top 14 season, defeating Narbonne 41-20 in the first match of the season and handing Stade Français their first defeat. They completed the season in a respectable seventh place.

After this, the Montauban rugby side competed in the 2008-09 European Rugby Champions Cup. However, they didn’t make it past the pool stage.

Following this, in April 2010, the club was relegated from the Top 14 to the Pro D2 after breaking budget rules. Later that month, they filed for bankruptcy. However, in 2014 they won the Fédérale 1 and were promoted back to the Pro D2 for the 2014-15 season. In 2024-25, they gained promotion to the Top 14 once again.

The Montauban rugby team is back in the Top 14 for the first time in more than a decade. Want to see how they perform? Follow all of the action with RugbyPass.
