Springboks' No.1 status in world rankings coming under increased threat

In seeing off Italy in back-to-back Tests and then comfortably beating Georgia 55-10, South Africa extended their winning run in Test rugby to seven matches. It is their best run since they swept all before them at RWC 2019, following their early loss to New Zealand, and beat Georgia on their return to the Test arena after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The series of relatively straightforward matches has also enabled Rassie Erasmus to blood new talent, including a rookie front row against Georgia – Boan Venter, Marnus van der Merwe and Neethling Fouche – ahead of The Rugby Championship and with an eye on their Rugby World Cup title defence in 2027.

What it hasn’t done, though, is improve the Springboks’ rating in the world rankings, as no points were awarded to them for any of their wins, which has allowed New Zealand to eat away at their advantage at the top.

The Springboks have been number one since mid-November last year, when they replaced Ireland, and entered the year with a clear two-point lead over the All Blacks.

Related

In contrast to the Springboks, the All Blacks have picked up points in each of their wins in the 3-0 series victory over France, even though Les Bleus travelled with a weakened team, to the extent that they now only trail by 0.72 points.

The gap could have been closer, but New Zealand’s 29-19 win in Hamilton fell just below the required margin to earn them more than the 0.34 points that they received.

This means that the Springboks’ status as the world’s number one is now seriously under threat, with them possibly being replaced at the top by the All Blacks after the opening weekend of The Rugby Championship on August 16.

South Africa host Australia at Ellis Park, while the All Blacks travel to Cordoba to take on Argentina. If both the world’s top two win, the Springboks will likely retain their place at the top, just.

Their rating won’t improve, given they’re at home and playing a side well below them, but it’s doubtful that the All Blacks will get enough points to wipe off the 0.72 deficit, as they’re also playing a team with a significantly lower rating, albeit away from home.

France, meanwhile, have hung on to fourth place despite suffering three straight defeats, as fifth-place England did not pick up any points for their 40-5 win over the USA in Washington, DC.

New Zealand were one of four teams in the top 20 of the rankings to increase their rating this weekend, although none of the changes led to an improved position.

Eighth-place Scotland recovered some of the ground they lost after their defeat to Fiji with their 41-12 win over Samoa, earning them 0.20 points.

Spain received the same amount of points after beating Canada 24-23, thanks to a penalty with the last kick of the game.

Chile were the only other team in the top 20 to increase their rating, a 35-21 win away to Brazil seeing their rating boosted by 0.63 points.

The big news coming out of Africa is Zimbabwe qualifying for the Rugby World Cup for the first time since 1991. Having successfully defended their Africa Cup title after a 30-28 win over Namibia, the Sables are now at an all-time high of 24th.

How the top 20 of the rankings will look when they are officially updated at 12pm (BST) on Monday:

  1. South Africa 92.78
  2. New Zealand 92.06
  3. Ireland 89.83
  4. France 87.82
  5. England 87.64

Sorry, bud. I was hungry.

I get emotional when I haven't had my spuds.

It was a choice.

Not sure why you’re taking that tone - we’re both making claims about cellular biology.

Some pup!

Not only can you tell me everything about myself but you can also do it on a cellular level! I’m impressed!

Were you hungry because you didn’t eat or hungry because you weren’t able to source a steady supply of food? Was it a choice?

I think I’d like to see some evidence for such a massive claim! There’s not much evidence for epigenetic trauma, and the little evidence that there is for it doesn’t suggest it’s a particularly significant factor. Me feeling a little bit hungry yesterday definitely has had a bigger impact on my psyche than your great-great-great grandparents experiencing famine has had on yours.

I think Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is a good song.

Others (including you) have ‘injected political societal opinions on a rugby forum’ by trying to argue that it is wrong to sing that song. I have tried to explain why I disagree with those arguments. You disagree with me, but for reasons that are hard to fathom other than that you have a chip on your shoulder about it all?

This has to be one of the most stupid of ‘rankings’ I’ve seen. But I suppose it gives some clickbait opportunities but not much else. The only ranking mechanism - and even that has its shortcomings - is the RWC. Finish and klaar as we would say down here in SA. But then I suppose I read it and responded so the effing thing works!

South Africa did not have ‘an early loss to New Zealand’ in the WC as the article states. They lost to Ireland 13-8 in Paris. Credit where it’s due.

Snap! I hate bankers too.

I’m not so sure on the last part though, Finn.

I’m of the opinion that generational trauma is a real thing and expressed genetically on a cellular level.

The singing “swing low”and the point of some of the people singing it, you don’t need to defend it and neither can u as it has that side to it ,you just keep injecting political societal opinions on a rugby forum u get baited with uncomfortable truths then start defending them for what reasons are hard to fathom other than u have a chip on ur shoulder about it all?like your little rant about the First Nations Pasifika team being “ racist” snd disgusted if they got good support so imo so much of what u say has an agenda where u constantly try to link with Rugby

Defend what?

To reiterate: I like Swing Low, Sweet Chariot; I like Fields of Athenry. I do not like God Save the King. I’ll defend the former two because they are great. I won’t defend the third.

B

And still u felt this need to defend it

I hate bankers, but its not as if most ppl Irish fans can directly relate to being famine victims deported to australia

I’ll buy you a pint!

It’s a bit different though when a bunch of pissed up city bankers on £150k a year are singing about being released from their plight, sailing into paradise. I’m sure they can relate to real struggle and victimisation.

Top marks though on wet bag Keir and the anti-monarchy stance.

And also invented being apologists for it.

Their history is not my history though.

South Africa. Champions cup match for Toulouse this year.

The last time the France national team toured South Africa was in 2017. They toured Australia in 2014. AD would have been 20 and 17 respectively.

So not many opportunities to do so. Or at all if you take on board as fact that he had his knee broken by Tadhg Beirne.

So if you take Japan 2019 into consideration - he has maxed out opportunities to tour the SH with France. Not?

O

Yep got my S and N mixed up there. Can you think of when he last toured a SH country? Japan WC maybe?

Pity there is no mention of Junior Springboks winning the U20 World Championship on this site. I wonder if RugbyPass would have made an effort if the Baby Blacks won…

There has been heaps of U20 final articles. Player ratings too. Great game to watch.

B
BA 20 days ago

Yes there is player ratings for baby Boks and match report ,are both on here in NZ so what you talking about?

A
AW 20 days ago

Yeah, It’s amazing to see the depth that Springboks is creating by introducing New Talent that New Zealand is still selecting old one legged injured players to try and win 2027 RWC! The AB’s could have used these games against France to Test the future of NZR young talent as France did! I say watch this French side in 2 years time and Springboks then we will see the real number 1 team in the World? Come on guys look at what Australia did JS, he took a gamble and put the future forward by using Young Aussie talent, brilliant! When are the AB’s going to learn only when they are sitting at the bottom of World Ratings, this is not rugby when NZR and NZ public are now becoming the fence sitters and hoping for a worldly hope that the Pacific island hoppers of past are going safe the AB’s? The islanders are now producing amazing performances in World Rugby go Fiji! The AB’s are becoming the “When We” of world rugby!

Also, Amazing to see Zimbabwe qualify for the Rugby World Cup 2027!

Bottom line the future of AB’s Rugby future will be short lived!

Way I see it, you can throw a blanket over that top 4 and I really couldn’t give a damn who actually tops the rankings. Just want the ABs to keep winning at Eden Park. And due a win against the saffers too. Been too long.
