Double Test upsets as Rugby Europe teams shock North America

Spain have made history, defeating the United States for the very first time with a 31-20 victory at the American Legion Memorial Stadium.

After a brief kick-off delay due to weather, Pablo Bouza’s side struck early through a clever short punt from scrum-half Tani Bay, regathered by wing Martiniano Cian and dotted down in the corner. Men’s Rugby Europe Championship 2025 Player of the Tournament, Gonzalo López Bontempo, slotted the conversion.

The Eagles, rocked by Spain’s fast start, struggled in the lineout and failed to capitalise on promising field position inside the opposition 22.

But the nightmare wasn’t over for the hosts. A series of fumbles handed the visitors more momentum, with back row Matheo Triki hacking the ball deep into the American half. Bay pounced to score under the posts.

Five minutes later, López Bontempo crossed for Spain’s third try, stretching the lead to 21 points.

With pride on the line, Scott Lawrence’s men responded—captain Ben Bonasso bagging a brace in quick succession, both converted by AJ MacGinty, to close the gap to seven at the break.

After the restart, the USA looked sharper and closed the deficit to a single point with two MacGinty penalties.

But as errors crept back into the game, both sides struggled for control. Spain’s defence held firm, producing a string of turnovers to repel the American comeback.

With the Eagles growing increasingly frantic, Spain seized the initiative—López Bontempo adding a penalty before number eight Raphaël Nieto finished off a thunderous maul in the dying moments.

It marks Spain’s first win over the USA after five previous defeats. Bouza’s side now head to Edmonton to face a wounded Canada, fresh off a shock 25-18 loss to Belgium.

Belgium stun Canada in historic upset
Despite taking an early lead, Canada were undone by a dazzling display from Matias Remue, who orchestrated Belgium’s attack and teed up his brother Florian for the opening try.

The hosts hit back, but lightning wing Siméon Soenen sliced through to score Belgium’s second.

Canada regained the lead through a dominant maul, with hooker Andrew Quattrin powering over. But the tide turned again in the second half as Belgium took control.

Florian Remue kicked eight points via two penalties and a conversion, while Soenen bagged his second try to seal a famous win for the Diables Noirs.

Sion Parry added a late consolation for Canada, who now prepare to welcome a buoyant Spanish side.

Shows the comparative weakness of the MLR league with 95% of the USA squad playing there and a large chunk of the canadian team too while the spanish and belgian players are mainly playing in proD2 or ProD3 in France

That is a good result for rugby Spain are a good team and those 2 teams would benefit from playing each other more yup it is good to play better sides but not getting hidings by 60 points

All player development

roads should lead to MLR in that part of the world?it would be in US benefit to have a strong neighborhood and gives opportunities in the pros so many dudes are from way further away than Canada or even Chile

Canadian rugby has been in decline for years and voting for Beaumont has accelerated it, as the Americas Rugby Championship folded. There needs to be new version of this that is taken seriously by all the nations (not like Canada did last time and send a B team). Canada will not make the world cup again, if you can’t beat a repechage team at home then good luck beating them away when it counts.

The pacific championship had been tried and will fail once again as it will cost too much with little to zero funds generated to pay for it.

Fiji and Japan going to probably be playing with the big boys next year with ABs touring SA and this will mean something has to change up ? If that goes well then you could add Uruguay and Chile to that comp, and then u sort out something good for the rest?

Spain made it to the RWC. The US despite being given so many opportunities failed to make it. Despite their local “pro” league and rather large number of players. Canada has been successfully self destructing for years. Sad. Both.

I suspect a rather large number of naturalized Eagles will be soaring in 31 and the games leading up to it, MLR got good money in it for the long haul

Spain’s rise could be the making of rugby as a global game. They were able to challenge Georgia in a couple of matches this year while getting the better of Portugal.

There are enough decent teams at Rugby Europe level which means that sloppy errors are erased. The likes of the US and Canada cannot start slowly against these guys anymore. It would be magic to see Belgium at a RWC. They have the best supporters in the world bar none. I tuned into their victory over Portugal a year ago and the atmosphere in that small stadium was like nothing I’ve ever seen. Portugal were in a world of trouble and the crowd were as much responsible as the Belgian team.

Wow! That's insane from Belgium. European rugby is just getting better and better. However, incredibly sad to see Canada continue to fall the way they are. They were once a great rugby nation in the 80s and early 90s. Would love it if world rugby could look at that and do something about it. Same goes for Romania…
