Springboks player ratings: Rassie Erasmus’ team overhaul paid off handsomely, as the world champions completely dominated Italy to leave the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium with a 45-0 win.

Even when they were down to 13 men, the hosts were relentless, underlining their status as the best team in the world by running in seven unanswered tries. Mannie Libbok, Marco van Staden and Canan Moodie all delivered standout performances.

1. Thomas du Toit – 4
The Bath powerhouse was hooked before the break after a few scrummaging errors picked up by the Bok staff. Tried to redeem himself with ball in hand, but it wasn’t enough to keep him on.

2. Malcolm Marx – 8
If consistency had a face, Malcolm Marx would be a leading candidate. The veteran hooker didn’t put a foot wrong at the set-piece or in support of his side’s ball carriers. Immaculate in guiding the maul.

3. Wilco Louw – 7
Squeezed out two scrum penalties, one of which led to the Boks’ second try. Imposed himself in the tackle, whether as primary or support defender. Yellow carded, but it had no bearing on the scoreboard.

4. Salmaan Moerat – 5
Captaining South Africa for the first time, Moerat had a patchy outing – a few handling errors and little impact at the lineout. Still, his composure helped settle the team after Wiese’s red card.

5. Ruan Nortjé – 6
Steady as a lineout option and involved in a cheeky in-game lineout variation. At times, he looked like a Lood de Jager clone with his tackling and counter-rucking.

6. Marco van Staden – 8
Quietly exceptional. The blindside flanker was everywhere off the ball – in the breakdown, supporting exits, and dominating in contact. Made two thumping hits that directly led to turnovers.

7. Pieter-Steph du Toit – 7
The 32-year-old enforcer didn’t need to be flashy. Ate up metres in contact and dismantled the Italian maul and lineout.

8. Jasper Wiese – 3
Started with intent, making several powerful carries and tackles, but his day ended early after a red card for headbutting Danilo Fischetti.

9. Grant Williams – 8
One of his finest games in green and gold. Controlled the tempo with sharp service and clever kicks. Scored the opener and helped spark the second try.

10. Mannie Libbok – 8
Lit up the opening quarter with an array of slick touches. Delivered a sublime wide ball to set up Edwil van der Merwe’s first try and managed the game well, though he missed two shots at goal.

11. Makazole Mapimpi – 8
The evergreen wing was a nightmare for Italy. Snatched a textbook turnover, made a line break, added a try and an assist. At 34, he’s enjoying a golden spell.

12. Andre Esterhuizen – 7
A battering ram in midfield. Gained ground on 11 of his 12 carries and consistently gave the Boks a front-foot platform.

13. Canan Moodie – 9
Outstanding. His defensive intensity helped choke Italy’s attack, particularly after Wiese’s sending off. His footwork for his first try was electric.

14. Edwil van der Merwe – 9
Has a habit for scoring. The Lions wing bagged a brace and carved Italy open with several clean breaks. A constant threat in open play.

15. Willie le Roux – 6
In his 100th Test, the veteran fullback had a low-key but tidy game. Kicked well and linked neatly with Mapimpi and van der Merwe. Subbed off to a standing ovation.

REPLACEMENTS

16. Jan-Hendrik Wessels – 7 – Missed a lineout but didn’t let it shake him. Carried well and scored off a maul.
17. Ox Nché – 7 – Came on before halftime and got stuck in, bossing the scrum and carrying well.
18. Asenathi Ntlabakanye – 5
19. Cobus Wiese – 5
20. Evan Roos – 6
21. Cobus Reinach – 5 – Tried to inject tempo but made some erratic decisions that cost possession.
22. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu – 6
23. Ethan Hooker – 5

I’m afraid that losing the last four in a row makes this comment seem like an Alice in Wonderland quote. Still eight year olds have their dreams so let’s not throw cold water on them. Better to say “Yes dear.” And let them dream.

Not sure where you are getting these predictions from. Not backed up by recent history. ABs will probably be slight favourites playing at home but there were plenty of weaknesses in their game that the Boks can exploit. There’s every chance the Bok scrum will dominate the ABs, while the AB lineout has been ropey at times. France also found a lot of space out wide which the likes of Kolbe and Arendse will exploit. If the Bok forwards get on top I can see the Boks winning at least one of those Tests.

Considering the average points difference between these two test teams over the past decade, as well as the fact that the boks defence will be tougher than you think, I’d go with:

Test 1: ABs 20 - Boks 18

Test 2: ABs 20 - Boks 18

The ABs really should win both their home games. All top 4 teams should win their home games.

It wasn't a headbutt it was a Maori greeting welcome

Careful. Next there’ll be claims he tried to gouge the players eye out with his nose!

B
BA 28 days ago

Jeesh I get why he was red carded but force has to come in to consideration with things like this yea he is head butting him but he is not trying to do it with any force to actually crack him …still dumb stuff hope he does it against ABs 😂😂naaaahhh straight up battle no more cards please

G
GrahamVF 28 days ago

The fact that heading even comes into his world view is telling. That belongs with the hooligan thugs of the Liverpool soccer ranks not on a rugby field. I hope he gets a very long suspension and I would never select him again. Hope Rassie sees that if you select idiots expect idiotic behaviour.

I only saw the headbutt once, in slow mo. looked like at normal speed it would be no more than a head tap to me (I didn’t even noticed with so many normal speed replays). Should have only been a penalty.

Was a crack up of a start (only watched first 20), crowd was into it (great to see, Kingz country no?) and the scrum kept getting pinged lol. Really cool start to the game but holly heck the officiating has been so poor this international window, he was nearly 2m offside and there ready to catch the ball before it was kicked!

R
RedWarrior 28 days ago

It wasn’t a tap. It wasn’t a full head smash, he put his forehead into the players nose with low to medium force. Straight red. End of story.

G
GrahamVF 28 days ago

The fact that he even thought of a head but is enough. That belongs in Liverpool.

What happened to Thomas Du Toit? I wasn’t able to watch the game . He has been immense this season ?

G
GrahamVF 28 days ago

Kept on giving away penalties and Rassie hooked him before half time.,

H
Hellhound 29 days ago

He didn't have a good game and got subbed on 30 minutes by Ox. I think he may get another chance next week against Georgia on tight head prop

B
BH 29 days ago

Wiese - 3 - hopefully the same number of games he’ll be suspended for a dumb headbutt

G
GrahamVF 28 days ago

Only three? With his track record of red cards he’l be lucky if it’s not six. He deserves that at least.

I wasn’t impressed with the Bokke. Breakdown is very poorly protected. Rusty performance and should have obliterated an ill disciplined Italian team

H
Hammer Head 28 days ago

The breakdowns were still not great - but I was impressed by how much we improved since last week. Particularly speed to the rucks and tempo.

Italy are fantastic spoilers. Competing in the 6N and generally having lacked the firepower to beat teams like France, England, Ireland and Scotland, they’ve developed a really good ability to be hard to beat. A nuisance where they can be.

They play well to their strengths and you can see that they believe they can compete against anyone at the breakdown. They’re fit and attack every ruck with numbers.

They provided a good test for the boks. The ABs used to be like that. Very fit and mobile, nuisance at rucks. So I think the boks will take good lessons from the Italians.

Had we just rolled the Azzurri we’d be very undercooked going into the next tournament.

Moerat has captained the boks before.

PSDT and Esterhuisen were excellent. 7s?

JHW missed multiple lineouts. Asenathi didn’t put a foot wrong. Evan Roos too.

WLR setup a try.

These post match ratings articles are jackpot or p1sspot.

Selecting Moerat reminds me of Einstein's definition of insanity. They can pick him 50 times and he’s never going to give anything more than a weak, at-best-club-level plodder. Enough with this Moerat experiment. The guy is an embarrassment.

They’re AI generated. I’m convinced of it.

At this point, Grant Williams has got to be the default starting 9. Lots of good options there, he’s just the best of the lot, I think. Serves a quick ball, and is a genuine running threat on his own. Hendrikse is no slouch, but Grant is simply more athletic.

D
DP 29 days ago

Head and shoulders our best 9. If the U20 Bok 9’couke box kick he’d be out 2nd in line.

H
Hammer Head 29 days ago

He was my man of the match.

He plays a lot like FDP. The contest between him and Cam Roigard will be really interesting.

Grant followed by Morne our top two 9s for sure.

J
JD 29 days ago

So is this the new standard? You get a 5 just for being on the team sheet? Moerat was on the field, but that’s all that can be said about him. Someone needs to explain to me how he keeps getting selected, because at international level he’s useless.

H
Hammer Head 29 days ago

Useless?

Wow. Thats extreme. At the very least captained well and his work rate was good.

The Lineouts turned to a ball of Sh1t after he was subbed.
