Many Springboks fans are saying same thing about the Lions

The British and Irish Lions have wrapped up their 2025 series against Australia with a game to spare, but not everyone is impressed, particularly Springboks fans.

The Lions snatched a dramatic 29-26 win at the MCG thanks to an 80th-minute try from Hugo Keenan – their first lead of the match – securing the series with a game to spare. Trailing 23-5 after a first-half Wallabies onslaught powered by Rob Valetini and Will Skelton, Andy Farrell’s side clawed their way back through tries from Dan Sheehan, Tom Curry, Huw Jones and Tadhg Beirne. Keenan’s late score survived a nervy TMO check for a Jac Morgan clearout.

It’s the Lions’ first series win since 2013, with a 3-0 whitewash now within reach.

While Farrell’s side celebrated a 2-0 series win in Melbourne, Springboks fans flooded social media with a blunt message: this Lions team wouldn’t stand a chance against South Africa.

Despite the comeback win for the British and Irish Lions, the sentiment among some South African rugby fans is less than impressed. Indeed, many Saffa fans are reminding anyone who’ll listen that the Boks have beaten the Lions in their last two series – in 2021 and 2009.

Cherry-picking the years, one Springbok fan account wrote: “Southern Hemisphere teams to win a test series vs the British and Irish Lions since the start of 2006: 1. 2009 Springboks 2. 2021 Springboks. We are the benchmark of Southern Hemisphere rugby”, while another directed a similar observation at RugbyPass writer Ben Smith, penning: “A gentle reminder that the only team that has won a Lions series in the last 20 years is the Springboks. Twice.”

Others were more blunt.

One account posted: “The Springboks would smoke this Lions team”, while another wrote: “This British and Irish Lions team can be glad they had to play Australia. The Springboks and All Blacks would have destroyed them.”

“This Lions team is poor… Springboks would absolutely savage them… an awful game devoid of quality,” wrote another fan. “Utter rubbish.”

Is this the same Springbok side that has a 30% win record in Australia over the past decade? Cure your passport fever boys before running your mouth

SA hosted the worst Lions tour EVER in 2021, and now their journos and fans want a distraction from their lingering shame. Bless their needy little hearts.

What do you mean “cherry-picking the years”? Those were the only Lions tours of SA in that period? This should be called an opinion piece if you're going to throw in these, not so subtle, and factually incorrect jabs at the Springboks.. Mr. Ian “Sour Grapes” Cameron.

Firstly. Good game and excellent spectacle. Well done to both teams.

Agree that ABs & Boks would give this BIL team a real go.

As SAFA, it wouldn't hurt to be more humble gents.

Agree with you MJ (especially as a Kiwi who loves ABs-Springboks gladiatorial history\contests !)

Also feel it's a bit disingenuous for the article to reference Lions series from 2006 to 2025 - the ABs won the 2005 series 3-0 !

The boks played 3 easy games to start the year off and struggled to beat a unproven All Blacks team with new coaching staff at home. Nobody knows how they are going to play this year as they haven’t had a proper challenge yet.

People if you cannot see that Oz is on the up I don’t know do u watch rugby? they will be up against it in RC there are zero easy weeks in that but I’m only seeing them getting better and with $$$ from this tour they finally getting their pathways set and a ability to secure young talent

Would not say that at all. I was at the game and there was basic mistakes at penalty kicks leaving lines uncovered and poor tackles that resulting in the lions scoring freely when in territory.

Unfortunately as an Aussie, I only foresee further decline for the sport in Aus. The AFL and NRL are both looking to expand and are both as wealthy as ever. Any bit of talent is going to be eaten up by those behemoths and what will be left over for Aus rugby is likely going to be not much better then the talent we currently have, which is substandard.

Seriously though… you’d have been pretty stupid to believe this BIL squad have achieved anything seismic against the worst wallabies team ever. Sit back and watch how NZ, Argentina, SA will utterly destroy them in the RC. BIL are an archaic concept that generates cash more than getting the pulse racing. World Cups are all that count. You know it.

This is not the worst Wallabies ever I have seen far worse Oz teans and a lot of those ended up being a heap better by EOY,Old Joe could make a few changes to this 23 and get similar results

Fell hard for this click bait article didn't you? Instead you should ask why they need Saffas to keep this site going, because clearly where you are from, your fans is seen as a loss. That is why they need us Saffas. 🤣

Pointless article.

I think a Sprinkbok 3rd 1V would beat this Lions team comfortably. I don’t think I have ever seen any country with such strength in depth. The end of Apartheid and the introduction of Black and Coloured players has given a massive boost to their game.

The 2021 BIL was much better than this sorry lot who needs a NH referee to pull them through against a very weak Wallabies team

I'm the educationally challenged and yet you can't read. I didn't ask how many world cups there have been. I mentioned show many we have played and how many we have won you tool. Try reading properly before responding. If your tribal ass can't understand go ask an educated human.

Useless article, designed to antagonize readers and generate traffic 🤣. The Lions’ can only play the opposition they are presented with, which is unfortunately a poor Wallabies team who they are struggling to rebuild. Of course NZ and SA would have challenged this Lions’ side…no brainer.

Are the boks just salty they will never be the greatest of all time? I mean they can only ever be the second best in their own hemisphere…
