The reigning Super Rugby Pacific champion Crusaders have rewarded second-year head coach Rob Penney with a shot at a repeat, with both parties putting pen to paper on a 2026 contract.

After Penney’s first season in charge saw the serial champions drop out of the playoff picture entirely, the Crusaders made what was a controversial call to stay the course, dismissing calls from within the fanbase to move on from Penney and search for new leadership.

A robust end-of-season review highlighted a number of issues that contributed to the club’s poor campaign, but Penney’s coaching was not one of them. This year’s end-of-season review has again highlighted his value to the club.

“I’m really excited and humbled to be given the opportunity to work with this great organisation and team again,” Penny said upon re-signing.

“This group is on the cusp of doing something pretty special again, and I’m rapt to be a part of it.”

Club CEO Colin Mansbridge offered some insight into the 2025 review’s findings, speaking to Penney’s enthusiasm for everything Crusaders.

“Rob uses the term love a lot – he loves this place, loves the environment and loves the players – he comes from this real place of deep care, and I think that’s felt by all of the players,” says Mansbridge.

“The players talked about how much he cared for them and how he genuinely tried to do the best that he could for them.”

The coach will now lead an All Blacks-laden group into a 2026 campaign in which they will run out in the brand new, $683 million Te Kaha Stadium, set for completion next April.

Their home venue may change, but Penney’s care for the team will certainly be one constant the club can rely upon.

“It’s deeply ingrained in me. I spent a long time here as a player before the Crusaders existed, and I just love the red and black.” Says Penney.

“The people here make it easy to care because they care – everyone is totally invested, and then the players turn up and top it off with their commitment and dedication, it’s an honour to play a little part in it.”

Fantastic Rob Penney staying another year as Crusaders coach. He endured a lot in 2024 and then this year vindicated the bosses at the Crusaders , by leading us to another Super Rugby title. His squad will be bolstered next year with 2023 star Leicester Fagainu’uku returning to the team.

2024 was a nightmare for the Crusaders and Penney when very little went right for them. The 2025 season showed that was an aberration and was a reward for the groundwork put in between times. Onwards & upwards for 2026. No Scooter Barrett next year so a fresh challenge now to be confronted.
