Wallaby halfback departs Western Force in search of Fijian dream

Having last donned Wallaby gold at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, Issak Fines-Leleiwasa will make the move to Fiji to compete with the Fijian Drua in 2026.

The 29-year-old racked up just shy of 50 games with the Western Force over four seasons, having previously spent two years with the Brumbies.

It was in 2023 when Eddie Jones made a number of bold selection calls for the Wallabies’ World Cup squad that the halfback got his shot in the international arena, going on to play in a warm-up clash against France and then in the pool stages against Fiji and Portugal.

2024 and 2025 have seen Fines-Leleiwasa take a backseat to Force recruit Nic White in Super Rugby, with just three starts coming in the past two seasons since the veteran Wallaby moved west.

Now, the international game is back on the agenda as the Fiji-eligible talent looks to represent his and his father’s heritage.

“A new chapter for me and my family, being a part of the Drua family will be special, not only with the club but also the Fans. I can’t wait for this next challenge,” he said in a statement released Thursday.

The excitement was shared by Drua coach Glen Jackson, who highlighted the depth the team boasts at halfback.

“We’re very excited to welcome Issak to the Drua Vuvale. Issak brings a wealth of experience in Super Rugby Pacific and Test Rugby, playing for Australia. He will also be eligible to play for Fiji soon,” Jackson said.

“Issak is a good leader and an outstanding rugby player. He will help to lead our team with Frank, Simi, as well as young Philip. It’s a position that is important in any team, and we are lucky to have the depth with international quality players.”

Force coach Simon Cron also issued a farewell message to Fines-Leleiwasa, who will remain eligible to play for the Force in Australia’s new Super Rugby AUS competition that kicks off in September.

“Finesy has been a critical team member at the Force. He has earned a lot of respect and admiration due to his professional approach both on and off the field,” Cron explained.

“We thank Finesy for being such a great team member and wish him, his partner Ren, and young daughter Isla, all the best for the next chapter of their lives.”
