'You whinge and bitch about us... stop your arrogance': Matt Williams

British & Irish Lions players including Jack Conan and Owen Farrell celebrate their side's fifth try, scored by Hugo Keenan, during the second test match between Australia and the British & Irish Lions at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Australia. Former Scotland coach Matt Williams has provided an impassioned response to the “disrespect” that has been shown to Australia over suggestions that the British & Irish Lions should look to tour another nation in the future.

In light of the series that has unfolded so far, where Andy Farrell’s side are yet to lose a match on Australian soil, the notion of changing the current touring schedule has been bandied about, with a tour of France being high on many people’s wishlist.

But the former New South Wales Waratahs coach Williams is adamant that the Lions will return to Australia again – scheduled for 2027 –  despite rugby union “hanging on by our fingernails” Down Under.

Speaking on Off the Ball recently, the Australian was scathing in his criticism of this arrogant attitude that has been shown towards his homeland, particularly when regarding the performance Joe Schmidt’s side put in against the Lions at the MCG.

“How do I say this without sounding an aggressive and angry person?” he said.

“The disrespect Australia has been shown by all the talk: ‘Why did we ever come back here again? What are we doing here?’ It has got up everyone’s nose here. It is really so disrespectful that your visitors come to this country, we provide everything for you, you’re making 10 fortunes that you don’t make in South Africa and New Zealand and all you do is whinge and bitch about us.

“And then when we come out in the second Test and play unbelievably well and you win in the last second – on a great try and a fantastic game – and people say ‘we don’t know if we’ll come back’. Really? Is that what you’re going to do? Well, good luck.

“I can tell you they’ll come back and I can tell you why they’ll come back. Because the Lions’ number one is about making money and Australia makes more money than any other tour. That’s the reason they’ll come back. The second part is Australian rugby is not like any other place in the world. We’ve got rugby league and AFL, there’s 36 professional teams in rugby league and AFL, we’ve got four professional rugby teams. We’re a minor sport in Australia. It’s not like New Zealand and South Africa and Ireland and England, we are a very, very minor sport here and we are hanging on by our fingernails. And instead of coming here and saying ‘we’ll help you hang on, we’ll help your game because we love rugby,’ people come here and say ‘you guys are simply not good enough, you’re not in our league, what are we doing here?’

“It’s been really hard to take, I can tell you. What you saw from the Wallabies last week was a response to that. It’s going to be hard for them this week, they’re so heartbroken, but I hope they come to the Olympic Stadium in Sydney and put in another really positive performance because it does need that and it does need the people who support the Lions to take a breath, stop your arrogance, stop telling us how crap we are. We’re fighting by ourselves to keep the game alive, could you help us? That hasn’t been the attitude so far.”

Australia should stop making excuses it’s a minor sport it’s up to Rugby Australia to grow the game, they are not a minnow rugby team, they won 2 world cups

well said and deeply impassioned. the money argument is probably another reason that we won’t get an Argentina/South America tour.

Coming from an Aussie these comments really take the biscuit…

So Williams has decided to combat all that negativity with…. More negativity?

Matt Williams is no doubt one of the most tiresome pundits in world sport and it is no wonder kids are all migrating to different codes if he is the spokesperson for union in Aus. He wouldn’t get a seconds airtime in any of the leading rugby nations.

Could someone please tell Matt Williams to stop moaning, this is embarrassing for him

Would they rather only win half their games like the last tour to NZ lol. This is the most competitive tour (even the early games) in decades outside of 2017.

Yeah, total disrespect, what else is new from the NH hot air brigade (at least AUS has won two RWCs, just saying). You’d think it wasn’t the best of FOUR countries v one, barely scraping through. Before a sensational crowd of 90,000+.

What if we’d said to the BILs, don’t bother coming back to NZ, you’ve only won 7/41 tests & 1/12 series. Or to the Home Unions, we’re not playing you anymore because you’ve only won SIXTEEN tests from 153 tests played v the ABs.

Imagine the outcry. So pull your heads out of your back passages, you pack of gits.

The future is in Oz hands they need to take all the good stuff from November and this year take it into TRC and onwards keep building on it, they do not need to be number 1 amongst the other oval ball sports just a bigger piece of the pie, being a self serving kiwi would be the best thing for our Super comp quite like we have had 2 young dudes def 1 on the up head over the ditch to ply their trade 👍🏽

Food for thought…just some facts…

The Wallabies won the WC more times than ANY NH team. They won it 2 times. The ONLY NH team to win a WC was England. What makes them unworthy of another B&I Lions tour?

This might be a reason why not…

There have been 10 B&I Lions tours to Australia. The BIL won 8 and lost 2 series. They played 25 games of which the BIL won 19 games and lost only 6.

A compelling argument except for that little irregularity regarding WC success. It would be a real shame if the day occurs where they decide that Australia isn't worth it. The idea of the BIL was about the best of the NH vs SH. Last I checked, France is NH. It would definitely dilute the BIL brand, even though it is all about money these days and not pride and passion. If they cancel the Wallabies for the future, that is exactly what it will be.

The idea of the BIL was about the best of the NH vs SH

It has never been about winning for the Lions, all their meaning is inwards about joining together and going on a journey.

Now that doesn’t mean it has to be Australia. They have setup a nice tradition (they needed to make it an annual thing and fit into a calendar) by cycling every 12 years, and this seems like a perfect number, but perhaps it could be every 16 years and a new tour being added?

I guess theres no reason they can’t change what the Lions means for them, they could turn it into a fat juciy paycheck instead.

Pundits expressed liking the idea of playing France, and if you made this work without disrupting the cycle I think receiving a tour by France could be fun. They can cancel a 6N nations every now and then for it.

Are you mocking your Scottish and Welsh Lions?

A
Alex 12 days ago

Honestly I wish that all nations would just be there for each other and respect each other more. Support each other. Support the community. Respect the opposition and the opportunity to play the. Rugby is getting more and more toxic when we should be banding together. We need a strong Australia, a strong Wales, a strong Japan, a strong Tonga, Fiji and Samoa. A strong everyone. And we probably really need completely new world cup winners too. Problem is that many people are too insular or selfish to care about those things sadly.

J
JW 12 days ago

Yes I just read Royce’s message above, well said Alex.

New WC winners? It is the pinnacle tournament of the sport! Do you want the Boks to deliberately lose a few WC's? Same with NZ? Just so that others can win it? Dilute it all for a “New WC winner?” If you want new WC winners, hope the rest of the teams catch up and play competitive rugby. Don't expect the best teams to throw tournaments. A lot of money and pride are in the line. Each and every player dream from a very young age about representing their country, to compete on the ultimate stage, which is the WC. Rugby is a very hard and tough game where they put their bodies on the line, their health. They put it all on the line, not just for their clubs, but for their countries too. The winners are the best team and in most cases the best players in the world. Do they not deserve to win the WC? Those same top players that is attracting the fans? That is the cause for so much tickets to be sold? That is making the game worth a damn? If it makes you feel better, know that no team is undefeatable, not even the double WC champs. Competition haven't ever been as close as it is today in the history of rugby. That gap have closed a lot and is closing even more between 2nd Tier teams.

Well if they are being clean swept then what’s the point of playing against what can be called a minnow rugby team. Why not rather tour Argentina the next time because they were able to do something Schmidt and co were unable to do, and that is to beat BIL.

J
JW 12 days ago

Essentially Aussie won that game, so your whole summation is wrong. But you are always wrong RugCs, so no surprise there!

From a neutral perspective I think he is totally spot-on this.

A different matter is the sad, disproportionate and soccer-esque drama they have created regarding the refereeing.

Is Tvvat Williams the “pundit” version of RP clickbait?

S
Stephen11 12 days ago

As a neutral I completely agree with Williams. I've always loved the Lions concept and proudly explain it to my non-rugby playing friends as a unique rugby trait which shows how cool our game can be in keeping up with the new times while also preserving its best traditions. However, the attitude from some B&I commentators has been extremely disappointing and definitely against the values we rugby folk love to wax lyrical about. Furthermore, as it has been pointed out elsewhere, the Lions’ touring record is not exactly bright, so surely it’d be good for them to learn a little humility.

J
JW 12 days ago

I get the frustration though, they haven’t exactly had the players of form all sort of culminating like they have in this tour. It would have been when you’d wanted to test yourself against the worlds best.

H

A bit of a thin-skinned response from Matt.

Very unusual, for Matt.

IkeaBoy 12 days ago

Across the last 50 years the all conquering lions have won just 4 test series out of 13.

75% of those test series wins have been against Australia. I very much doubt they’d ever want to stop touring there every 12 years.

J
JW 12 days ago

Lol and despite feeling like you’re allowed to win just to keep your spirits up, or feel like when your getting selected just because your dads the coach, it must be one of the most.. prestigious (?) places to tour, and favourite among fans? I know Nick has mentioned his one tour was a bit dull week to week when they were mostly out of the spot light, but for a player that is probably the balance you would like.

Ed the Duck 12 days ago

Not a guy I find myself in agreement with often, or ever, but good points well made here for sure. Aussie rugby needs a hand up and that’s in everyone’s interests, well everyone that wants to see the game thrive and continue to grow.

Australia does not do themselves any favors by constantly blaming the ref for every time they lose a game and heavily bias commentary. No other country has such arrogance. Personally I watch the wallabies play from online streams with international commentary as I can't stand the level of bias and inability to show sportsmanship. It's actually worse than cringe.

J
JW 12 days ago

Was the aussie commentary going back to the UK was it? Feel for you guys if thats the case lol

As a nuetral I didn’t think the comms where that bad, Morgan just added at the end for the aussie viewers that they were robbed and their nation should have won. A fair message to send imo.

I really don't think the majority of Lions fans would ever want to stop touring Australia. This is just a vocal minority. 10 years ago Australia were in a world cup final and before that were always one of the top 4 sides in the world. I genuinely think the vast majority of rugby fans up here want to see Australian rugby thriving. No doubt there have been some morons claiming we shouldn't be touring Australia but rugby needs to develop globally and should be nurtured wherever there are issues and as a rugby community we need to support Australia and places like the islands, Japan, Georgia etc to develop and make global rugby more competitive than ever. So if any Aussie fans are getting this vibe, just f**king ignore the haters, I don't personally know anyone who feels this way and I'm sure I speak for most England fans and the rest of the Lions nations when I say that we want you back. ❤️

J
JW 12 days ago

Yes, the problem though Tom is that they didn’t see Aussie rugby as thriving, when it was very much staring them in the face.

PS to be clear, you guys missed out by not getting excited for the contest of this tour. Would have made this match a nice surprise though?
