The feat Owen Farrell achieved with Lions series that no man has in pro era

Owen Farrell collected his seventh British & Irish Lions cap when he came on for the final 20 minutes of the second Australia Test at the MCG on Saturday, and was soon after achieving a first for any player in the professional era.

The former England captain became the first Lion to win two series since the game went professional in 1995.

Of course, there have only been eight Lions series in that time, with only three series wins for the visitors, but, being the only remaining player on the current tour to have taken part in the victorious series against the Wallabies in 2013, Farrell was the only player this year who could have achieved such a feat.

Of the squad that triumphed over the world champions South Africa in 1997, not one was still playing 16 years later when the Lions won their second series of the professional era, let alone in contention to make Warren Gatland’s squad.

This accolade could very well have slipped Farrell’s grasp had Elliot Daly not fractured his arm, as the 112-cap England international was not in the initial Lions squad. Though the number of 2013 tourists that are still at the top of their game is decreasing rapidly, the likes of Manu Tuilagi and Taulupe Faletau were contenders to make the squad this year, and could very well have set this record themselves.

Being only 21 in 2013, Farrell’s game time in the Test series was limited to just one bench appearance for the final 17 minutes of the third Test, though he was an unused substitute for the opening two matches. Similarly, he has only been limited to 20 minutes so far this Test series to date after being omitted from the first Test.

Curiously, for a player of Farrell’s calibre and reputation, he has only started three Lions Tests, which all came against the All Blacks in 2017. A season in the Championship with Saracens in 2021 perhaps hampered his chances of a start against the Springboks, where he featured from the bench in two Tests.

With the squad named this week for the third and final Test of this series, Farrell could well be handed his fourth Lions start.

FAZ, has been a manufactured hero. He was a low contribution bench youngster, and was a bit part role player in this test.

Morne Steyn was a full game time 10 in both his career winning Lions tests, kicking the winning kick in 2009 and 2021.

Far more humble man, who was given a high tackle pass for 50% of his career.

If Borthwick picks Farrell England's chances at the next World Cup will be gone. As the comments say the Smiths are the future. Farrell has no pace.

As an Aussie, I don’t get the anti-Farrell vibe always coming out of England. His team mates at every level speak glowingly about what he brings to a squad. That said, England certainly need to be getting both Smiths some game time in the 10 jumper once the Lions Tour is over. Doesn’t mean Ford and Farrell are history. Performance is the key regardless of age. That said, Ford is 18 months younger than Owen F and on current form, would be an excellent ‘wise head’ as part of an England squad to Australia in two years time.

Totally undeserved

How could you possibly justify bringing Farrell on as a 13? A position he has never played and with the game in the balance.

In 20 minutes he made 3 passes made one tackle and missed two otherwise completely anonymous.

When Gibson-Park was trapped in coffin-corner it was Farrell who saved the day by clearing out the jackler. He did at least two more key clear outs at rucks and the Aussies never looked like scoring a try when he was on the pitch

Morne Steyn did this in 2021.

First attempt to tackle on the game? Hid his arms and was bumped off by Wilson. No surprise.

Wasn't a glowing contribution.

I wonder if Owen Farrell has the appetite to return for England next season?

I’m still not convinced if this was a final farewell at International Level with the Lions and he will stay away from England and enjoy the remaining time he has in the game with Sarries.

Will be an interesting dilemma to see what both he and Steve Borthwick do next Autumn.

Appetite is one thing, legs to make it to 2027 are another. Playing in a one off series has a point but can you see him being in the line up in 2 years? The Smith's will be wiser and better equipped. Ford still has the nouse at 10. At 12 there is a flood of younger players shown on tour and some guy called Ollie Laurance to come back. If so why does Borthwick invest match minutes into him.

I'm sure he's already said he wants to play for England.
