Erasmus invites 3 U20 stars into Bok squad as multiple RWC winners miss out

South Africa head coach Rassie Erasmus has invited three U20 stars to train with his newly-named 37-man Springboks squad ahead of their first two matches of the Rugby Championship next month.

Junior Springboks talisman Haashim Pead, winger Cheswill Jooste and flanker Bathobele Hlekani, fresh from their World Rugby U20 Championship win over New Zealand U20 at the weekend, will train with the squad in Johannesburg over the next two weeks.

Scrum-half Pead will not train alongside double World Cup winner Faf de Klerk, however, who has missed out days after he was forced from the field in the victory over Georgia not long after coming on as a substitute.

De Klerk is on the standby list for the Boks, who get their Rugby Championship campaign under against Australia on August 16 at Ellis Park, alongside fellow World Cup winners Makazole Mapimpi and Lukhanyo Am, who missed the July Tests with a knee injury. Lock Salmaan Moerat, No.8 Evan Roos, newly capped tighthead Neethling Fouche and flanker Vincent Tshituka are also on the standby list.

“We are tremendously proud of the Junior Springboks for winning the World Rugby U20 Championship and we were thrilled to see the talent coming through the junior ranks, so we opted to invite three of them to join us to expose them to our structures and the standards required at top international level,” Erasmus said of the U20 players.

“We believe this camp will benefit them significantly, and we are excited to see how they slot in and train with us.

“Unfortunately, we had to limit the size of the squad to ensure maximum outputs and more individual attention at our training sessions, so although more players could have been invited, we could only select three.”

On the players who have missed out, he said: “It’s always challenging to reduce the squad, especially given how the expanded group of players put up their hands during the Castle Lager Incoming Series, but we always said we would select a smaller, more manageable squad during the Castle Lager Rugby Championship.

“This group includes several experienced players and a few younger guys, who grabbed their chances in the last few Tests, so we are pleased with this squad for the first two matches.

“We have also informed the players on standby what our plans are and what we expect from them, so that all of them are ready to step up if needed.”

What a privilege to keep world class players like De Klerk and Mapimpi out of the squad.

Is Thomas du Toit injured?

Huge surprise otherwise.

That’s an incredible squad of 37 and will be an outstanding squad of 23. This is potentially Rassie’s strongest ever squad of players given the level of depth he has built.

I am surprised he has not included Dan Du Preez, who is a far better player than Jean-Luc and can’t believe Thomas Du Toit didn’t make the squad, he would walk into most other International sides at the moment, which shows how many options they have at present.

Can’t wait for TRC to start.

Tshituka was best player on the pitch for 2 games he played so can only assume he’s injured! Play him at 6 or 8. Good to get Pead and Jooste in the mix now as next World Cup they might be needed!

In the MIX for sure!

The problem for the Boks will be the 8 man position and loose forwards. When you look at this squad you really wonder what the thinking is with respect to the loose forwards. I dont rate Cobus Wiese as a Springbok 8. He is a lock not an 8 and he is not a 7. He is too slow across the ground and doesnt have the necessary skillset for 7 or 8. Jean Luc Du Preez is an 8 but he has barely played at international level but deserves his chance. Then we have Kolisi, Smith and Van Staden who can all play 8 but Van Staden is a 6, Kolisi is a 6 who has alot of experience at 8 and can slot in there and Smith is your impact sub who covers multiple positions so I dont see him starting. Kolisi is also on the wane and no longer the same player. Yes Mostert can cover 7 and so can Nortje but Mostert is no spring chicken and is no longer suitable for that position and Nortje does not have the speed to cover the same ground as a natural 7 even if he hits alot of rucks and makes alot of tackles. Dickson is injured, Louw Injured, Roos who would be a natural not included, Wiese suspended and Tshituka has been added on standby only despite there being no 7 cover for Du Toit. So cant get my head around these loose forwards. What happened to Francke Horne as well? No room for him but is a natural 8 and plays well for Lions.

Jean-Luc is more of a 6, rather than 8, which is strange they did not pick Dan du Preez, who is an outstanding 8 and was at a similar level to Jasper Wiese when they were both in the Premiership.

Personally, I would play Mostert (6), Sdt (7) and Smith at 8, with Snyman & Etzebeth at lock. That’s an unbelievably powerful back five and with Marx & Smith together, you are not lacking at the breakdown.

You answered your own question there. Louw and Cameron Hanekom are two of our best, if not the best, emerging options at 8. Injuries and Wiese’s brain fart has disrupted things for us a bit. But I don’t think the options on the table in this squad are that big an issue.

It’s interesting that very few (four) players have been selected out of Europe. The rest are based in SA and Japan…

And you forget about the best 8 in the country, who is also injured… Cameron Hanekom.

For the rest, they may be getting on, but they still play very good. Besides, you can't just throw in young boys. This amount of experience can't be chucked away. Rassie will fade them out in due time. I wouldn't mind to see what PSDT can do at 8. Rassie should give him a try there. He is fast and nimble for such a big man, and his offloads is just as great. Is Rassie missing a trick there? Until now he had no shortage of excellent loose forwards, but am apprehensive about this team chosen. Just glad it's against the Wallabies and not the AB's, although it is a team that can get it done even against the AB's.

We don’t need to worry TOO MUCH. I mean a few year ago Warren Whitely played at 8😂

Stoked for Ethan Hooker

Well well. Pead is in the mix.

Wouldn’t be surprised if he plays by the end of the year actually. Japan. Certainly by the incoming series in 2026.

He isn't in the squad. The 3 under 20’s players was invited to train only with the Boks, to see how the system works and what to expect. However, just being invited is enough as Rassie is very hard to impress. They are definitely next gen Boks. If they impress during training, who knows? Rassie likes his surprises

well, he isn’t in the squad, so not in the mix just yet!

Pead is an outstanding talent and will be a certainty for the next SA world cup squad.
