The All Blacks bounced back with a comprehensive beat down of France to win the second Test and claim a 2-0 lead in the Lipovitan-D July series in front of 33,872 in the capital.

They led 29-3 at half-time after tries to Cam Roigard, Ardie Savea, Codie Taylor and Tupou Vaa’i and went on to win 43-17 in the second with some late French resistance.

Here’s how the All Blacks rated in Wellington:

1.Ethan de Groot – 6.5
Scrum held up well throughout entire match. Big push won a penalty on halfway against the feed. Maul was strong too driving well, scoring from five out. Lost a turnover on attack early in the second half. Off at 47.

2. Codie Taylor – 9
Big engine from Taylor with a high work rate in the first half. Lineout again was untroubled, operating smoothly. Scored the third try of the night with a rolling maul. Another superb showing from the hooker. Off at 54.

3. Fletcher Newell – 7
Lots of defence in close channels for Fletcher. Scrum and maul very strong. Off at 47.

4. Patrick Tuipulotu – 8
An imposing performance from the second rower. Early lineout steal for Patrick as well as multiple grabs. Was the top target in the first half. Had some strong carries too. Finished with seven lineout takes in a big shift.

5. Fabian Holland – 8
Another busy night for Holland who was in the thick of it on defence clocking up tackles. A nice link play to support Ioane provide the assist for Vaa’i. A big target at lineout time, splitting takes with Tuipulotu.

6. Tupou Vaa’i – 7
More of a defensive performance from Vaa’i, topping the All Blacks tackle count in the first half. Had a penalty against for playing the ball on the ground. Scored a try up the middle with great support play.

7. Ardie Savea – 9.5
A big game from the captain returning to his hometown. Threatened up the middle early but was stripped in the tackle for turnover. Nice recovery from a Barrett chip kick moments later. Clever trick play to set up Roigard for the first try. Picked up a try from a maul. Had a big break down the left side that sparked the All Blacks fourth try. Came up with a ruck steal.

8. Christian Lio-Willie – 6.5
Carried a lot as part of the All Blacks game plan. Came up with a key breakdown turnover on halfway. Off at 54.

9. Cam Roigard – 8.5
Early box kicking strategy again for the All Blacks. Good distance on his clearing kicks. Scored the first try on a brilliant trick play down the blindside. Looked dangerous when sniping around the rucks. Off at 63.

10. Beauden Barrett – 6
Wasn’t as influential as last week. Pinned the corners well with his boot. Unlucky to be binned for an attempted intercept that went to ground but it did prevent a French break becoming more. Some troubles under the high ball. Try assist for Jordan in the second half a nice touch.

11. Rieko Ioane – 7
Came off the wing to carry hard a few times. A big injection into the line and offload from the deck paved the way for Tupou Vaa’i’s try. Had a couple of offloads on the night. Back in the try scoring mix with a great winger’s finish in the corner in the second half.

12. Jordie Barrett – 6
Started well with a key role in the All Blacks’ attack as usual. Beaten a couple of times on the outside on defence. A pushed pass near the French tryline ended with a turnover and long break the other way, but an illegal tackle brought play back. Off for HIA at 28 but back on for second half. A nice assist for Ioane’s try.

13. Billy Proctor – 6.5
A quiet first half for Billy with one half chance running a gap outside Jordan close to the line. Had his best plays on defence making one crucial cover tackle and turnover forcing pressure at the ruck. Had another critical save early in the second half. Had some underrated touches in moments. Carried a lot and started to look threatening in the second.

14. Emoni Narawa – 6
A few touch cover tackles by Narawa on his touchline. Probed well off his wing, making gain line consistently. A purist might say he was out of position a few times but no damage was done.

15. Will Jordan – 6.5
Cleaned up well in the backfield a few times in the first half, saving a grubber kick on one occasion in the in-goal. Burst onto a ball from Barrett for his 41st Test try for the All Blacks. Looked to expose some tired defence late with some challenging runs.

Substitutes

16. Samisoni Taukei’aho – 5 – On at 54. Lineout maintained efficiency with Taukei’aho on. A couple of carries.
17. Ollie Norris 5 – On at 47. Solid set-piece and work rate. Seven tackles.
18. Pasilio Tosi  – 3 – On at 47. Couple tackles and set-piece efficiency.
19. Samipeni Finau – N/A – On at 60. Three tackles for Finau in a short stint.
20. Du’Plessis Kirifi – 5 – Industrious cameo. A nice involvement on Ioane’s try with his first touch. Brought some oomph in defence. Four carries.
21. Cortez Ratima – On at 63 – N/A.
22. Timoci Tavatavanawai – 4 – On at 28 for Barrett. Carried hard and looked strong with ball in hand with his first touches in Test rugby. Five carries in the end for the debutant.
23. Damian McKenzie – N/A – On at 63. Brought energy with his touches in the final quarter.

I think Ardie showed a more all round versatile game, taken people to ground nicely, winning some ground battles and good runs in tight and loose, I really enjoyed it. Has the right work ratio if theres a grunty six and enables a big guy to play 8. Who’s that player though? Sotutu? Or do we say Sititi plays big and that’s good enough? Parker is an 8 in the Reid mould but I don’t know if there is a lot else coming through.

Ratima was probably a victim the second half performance in general but I wonder if he won’t be skipped for game three (Fakatava looked good). Big Jims busts telling if not the team was failing so bad again that they couldn’t benefit from his carries.

Solid performances alround.

Sititi plays big enough and our other dudes Lio-Willie Ardie Lakai ( yup he will be back is a gun) all hold their own down in the physical stuff I reckon and got skillful feet and hands…coming up Micah Fale 💪🏽💪🏽the NRL must have been offering him a fortune only 18 he looks the most powerful runner in the whole tournament and got good hands too 112kg only going to get bigger hopefully plays some NPC

Mixed bag from the backs, but 1 thing we def found out last night was that our answer at 12 is not DH

Brodie, Love, ALB, Bower, Hotham, Luke, yet to be in the 23. Anyone else?

Will Razor execute his wish to give everyone a run? I can’t see how tbh.

Possible:

- Luke for Christian

- Anton for Jim

- Bower for Tosi

Given that FRA will be selecting a ‘peak’ 23, I think Brodie, Noah, & Love may be out of luck. Unless Razor goes bold.

Interesting dilemma.

J
JW 29 days ago

All the new ones is how I took that. Doesn’t need to play ALB or Luke (if fit) at all.

It also means “in the primary position”, so includes Dmac at 10 and not Love etc, These guys would surely be retain for the even bigger RC squad. First up is Australia no? He should be looking at it as three games before Eden Park, whats the date we need make sure is free, 9th Sept?

43 - 17 scoreline proved the AB coaching staffs team selections were correct..

Rieko now left wing and Jordie finally combining in a try scoring move…

Codie Taylor is playing so well. Came back from a sabbatical last year in such great form. For the Crusaders and now All Blacks this year, inspirational. Best hooker in the world and a defacto captain . On and off the field , one of this countries finest.

An outstanding performance from the starting forward pack, complete dominance. What makes the performance even more impressive is that 4 sure fire starters were missing in Williams, Lomax, Barrett, and Sititi. When you add them into the starting lineup and drop DeGroot, Newell, Tuipulotu, and Lio-Willie to the bench, this is a very formidable pack with depth.

Fabian Holland was once again immense and certainly has secured a starting lock jersey as not only does he dominate the line-out but has been the leading tackler in both tests of the year and a strong ball carrier with some nice off loads.

Tupou Va’ai was excellent at blindside flanker on both sides of the ball and hopefully he stays their for the Rugby Championship and All Blacks can bring in Sam Darry, if fit, as fourth lock (I always assume Josh Lord is injured).

However, of the reserve forwards, only Norris and Tosi impressed as they scrummed well and are both huge, mobile props in open play. Taukeo’aho for the second test in a row did not play to his previous 2023 form (it’s noticeable he was out injured all of 2024). Samipeni Finau simply provides no impact at all despite his massive frame and athleticism. And for the second week in a row, Duplessis Kirifi had no steals, big carries, and did nothing to dispel the fears that he is too small for test rugby.

B
BA 28 days ago

Kirifi did some nice link work had a couple good runs and sweet pass to Jordie for Reiko try

J
JW 29 days ago

Imagine how good Scott Barrett would be if you like Vaa’i there!

They need to start Samisoni and bring Taylor on to fire lke that all the time (we know from history these are flash in the pan performances and he constantly gets ground down and fatigued starting every game) at the backend of games. It could give the team stronger carrying at the start when they need it and also provide the best opportunity to get him firing by 2027.

B
BA 29 days ago

Beaudie was alright tonite Dmac should still get a start especially being at the Tron would like to see Love on bench bit of risk as Frenchies coming hard for last test with a plan to steal one I reckon but from what I have seen our set piece is dominating that is nearly always enough to get a W

J
JW 29 days ago

Dont worry, it’s not like Love is worse than BB or Dmac at 10.

I just hope he’s not given the 15 instead. He needs to be Dmacs sub.

B
BA 29 days ago

Cam was very good again not perfect but clearly one of the best on field we are very lucky to have him, Cortez losing that ball on ground at end won’t do him any favors would have been good to grind out another try Hotham must be nipping st his heels I reckon

I
IS 28 days ago

Hotham isn’t even close to ratima or roigaurd roigaud also has knocked the ball on many times by your logic should we not let him play then

Y
YeowNotEven 29 days ago

I’d like them to start Hotham with Roids on the bench for Hamilton. Give him a fair crack.

H
HS 29 days ago

If Dmac played like BB did today he would have been given a 4 and everybody would be calling for him to be dropped… So many mistakes, didn’t pass the ball down the backline for the first 30 minutes… That is why the backline went nowhere today… The pack was immense… Forwards won that game…

F
Flatcoat 29 days ago

Agree..forwards won the game..

H
HS 29 days ago

Jordie actually looked better at 10 than BB while he was off…

C
Cantab 29 days ago

A fine effort in the 1st half but not so hot in the 2nd when errors crept in and allowed the French to be more competitive. Kicking game more accurate than Dunedin but still several poor ones. Tuipolotu had a solid game and a very adequate replacement for the injured Scooter. Ioane played well enough on the wing to warrant further chances.

F
Flatcoat 29 days ago

Tuipolotu had more than a solid game.

lol riko wasnt a 7 wow he was a 5, he still needs to go badly . also tuipolutu ,Holland, Ardie, Roigard were all fantastic 8’s . Vaii was a 9!

Y
YeowNotEven 29 days ago

I thought Rieko was very good, but I wish they’d given Leroy a shot.

S
SadersMan 29 days ago

Reiko’s match numbers were pretty impressive, with a very well taken try cherry on top, to be fair. I expect he’ll be a starting wing for the rest of this season.

J
J V 29 days ago

I agree with you, the players you mentionned were fantastic ! Cam Roigard is turning into one of my favorite nines in the world. He can do amazing flashy plays at times, but also the basic scrum-half things at a very high level, consistently.

d
d 29 days ago

Pretty clear the ABs go better without BB or DM gifting away the ball, which keeps the #10 question alive. 9 and 15 look bolted down for Roigard and Jordan now, maybe, but not sure Narawa lifted to test level.

I
IS 28 days ago

Narawa was great what you mean consistently made gainline didn’t miss a single tackle better than Clarke and sevu under the highball literally his second ever game literally has to save proctor from getting embarrassed even more

I
IS 28 days ago

What you on about dmac doesn’t gift the ball away literally has the highest kick retention rate in world rugby

J
JW 29 days ago

You’re disrespecting DM mentioning him in that company.

O
OutRun22 29 days ago

funny comment as last week bb was the player of the day and kicked everything which saved us bub. dmac aint the answer thats for sure.

E
Easy_Duzz-it 29 days ago

BB attacking kicks are trash . 1 min in and his first attacking kick lead to instant pressure . he’s the weakest link . 33 min before his attacking kick worked . All Blacks run the ball when he got sent off and we scored . if BB can make his attacking kicks contestable or kick in to space and it’ll be better for us . hopefully he can run first and kick 2nd .. conversions are consistent .

cant wait to get mounga back next year …

J
JW 29 days ago

I’ve liked his running game this year (well since he returned and played fullback against England actually. but Razor stuffed up an chance of that coming to fruition) and if he just carried hard instead of kicking hed be fine imo.

T
Thomas K 29 days ago

His kicking really does need a look at. WAY to often it goes down the throat of the winger or 15.

Y
YeowNotEven 29 days ago

His kick options aren’t bad; he has a plan. His execution sux though.

So frustrating to watch. Not all of them, he has some nice touches but goddamn we are short of 10s with a dope kicking game.

G
GH 29 days ago

all Barrett brothers are now a reserve if the plane crashes and the AB have to make a new team. And then, NZ would be better served with their youths

J
Jase 29 days ago

Yes to Mounga! Nah don’t agree about BB and to throw in a spanner Love instead of DMack!!

j
johnz 29 days ago

There was a time, a long time ago, that BB was a run first player. And he was phenomenal. But somewhere along the line, he decided he loved the sight of his own kicks.
