Golden Lions

The Golden Lions, known as the Sigma Golden Lions for sponsorship reasons, is a professional rugby team from South Africa that competes in the country's Currie Cup competition.

Read on to discover more about the Golden Lions. On this page you'll find a detailed history of the team and an insight into the current squad. In addition, you'll also be able to see the side's latest results and upcoming fixtures.

The history of the Golden Lions rugby team can be traced back to 1889, when the Transvaal Rugby Union was formed. Over the years, the side has been known by many names. Although they're currently known as the Sigma Golden Lions, they've also been known as Transvaal and the Gauteng Lions.

Throughout their history, the Golden Lions have also gone through periods of turmoil and triumph. For example, in the 1980s, financial problems meant that the union almost disbanded entirely.

However, today the Golden Lions rugby team is widely regarded as one of the most successful teams in the history of South African rugby. In total, the team has won the Currie Cup 11 times, including three victories in the professional era. In addition to this, they also won the 1993 edition of the Super 10 tournament.

Today, the Golden Lions regularly compete for the top honours in the Currie Cup. They play their home games at Ellis Park Stadium, which can hold more than 62,000 spectators.

Over the years, the Golden Lions squad has featured several greats of South African rugby, including Francois Pienaar, Rassie Erasmus and Schalk Brits.

Today, the Golden Lions squad remains one of the strongest in the competition. The current Golden Lions squad includes several current and former Springboks players, including Jannie du Plessis, Willem Alberts and Elton Jantjies.
