History of Leicester Tigers
The Leicester Tigers rugby team has been in existence since 1880. Since then, the team has firmly established itself as one of the best and most-decorated rugby sides in England.
After all, since 1987-88, Leicester Tigers have won a record 11 Premiership Rugby titles. In fact, from 2005 to 2013, the team even appeared in nine successive Premiership finals. In addition to this, the Leicester rugby team is also one of only three sides that have never been relegated from the top division of English rugby.
Additionally, the team has been just as successful in Europe. They won back-to-back European Rugby Champions Cups in 2001 and 2002. Plus, they’ve featured in the final a further three times.
The Leicester rugby team has been known by the nickname of 'The Tigers' since around 1885. It's thought that the side's nickname comes from their playing kit. However, in the early days of the team, the Leicester Tigers rugby club also had ties to the Leicestershire Regiment, who were known as 'The Tigers' after serving in Goa.
During the side's golden era in the early 2000s, three Leicester Tigers players were members of the England team that started in the 2003 Rugby World Cup Final, including captain Martin Johnson. However, since early 2014, Leicester Tigers have only won one major piece of silverware. This was the Premiership Rugby title the team claimed in 2022.
Over the years, the Leicester rugby team have been phenomenally successful. We have no doubt that the good times will soon return for Leicester Tigers rugby club.
